GOLCAR ended an 89-year wait to put their name on the famous old Sykes Cup after a fabulous 34-run win over Elland in the final at sun-kissed Honley yesterday.

Before a massive crowd of around 1,500 (probably the biggest since the glory days when the final was always staged at the old Fartown ground) Golcar defied the underdogs tag to produce a tremendous win and grab the Romida-backed trophy for the first time in the club’s history.

Having won the toss, Golcar skipper Ashley Pamment not surprisingly chose to bat first and was rewarded by watching his opening pair James Sykes and Steve Whitwam put together a cautious, but match-defining century stand which set up the perfect platform. Danny Rhodes and Craig Fletcher bowled very tight in the first dozen overs with Golcar having made just 16 off the first 10, which was remarkably when Whitwam got off the mark! When Rhodes and Fletcher made way for the all-spin attack of James Thornton and Shahid Raje, Golcar’s pair were still in circumspect mode, and by the halfway mark had reached exactly 50.
But things changed dramatically.
Whitwam hoisted Thornton for six and followed up with another off Raje next over and his continued acceleration brought him his own 50 in the 29th over before he welcomed leg-spinner Greg Buckley into the attack by belting him for another maximum off his first ball.
The run-fest carried on a pace as the openers scored the next 50 in just six overs before Elland finally made the breakthrough, when Sykes (41) was caught by Buckley at deep mid-on off the bowling of Thornton at 106-1 in the 33rd over.
But with the perfect platform built, in strode Craig Horner who immediately showed his intent by hoisting Thornton into the adjacent gardens for a big six. Whitwam fell in the 35th over, caught by Fletcher off new bowler Sam Scott for a well-made 64, which included three sixes and four fours, but if Elland thought it would slow the Swallow Lane side down they were quickly mistaken as Horner launched a barrage of big shots. And he was not alone as Craig Ruscoe blazed a six and Mickey Illingworth four fours in a quickfire 18.

But it was Horner who really laid into Elland finishing unbeaten with 82, comprising seven fours and three sixes made from just 42 deliveries as Golcar put on a massive 189 runs in the second 25 overs to post a very useful 239-5 target.

Scott was the only Elland bowler to take more than a single wicket, but his two victims cost him 56 runs from only seven overs. Scott then opened Elland’s batting with wicketkeeper Greg Finn, and they too began steadily but after progressing to 32 without looking in any difficulty Golcar’s Australian seamer Ben Hilliard claimed the first leg before decision of the day to remove Scott for 10.
However, the crucial wicket came in the 15th over, when Will Hinchliffe found the edge of Elland skipper Ryan Robinson’s bat and his opposite number Pamment snapped up a sharp low catch at first slip.
New batsman Lee Baxter launched a couple of searing straight drives for four to bring up Elland’s 50, but the introduction of spin duo Whitwam and Horner put a brake on the scoring, especially Finn, who had looked more at ease with the pace attack.
Elland were gradually slipping behind the clock, and Whitwam inflicted further damage by trapping Finn leg before in the 33rd over for 46 (five fours). And in the next over Horner removed the dangerous Buckley who skied a delivery only to see the safe hands of Pamment pull off another good catch the ball coming over his shoulder.

Richard Whiteoak and Raje both came and went pretty quickly to the spin pair, and it was only when young Fletcher came out and smashed two sixes and three fours in great flurry which brought 32 runs in no time, that Elland saw a glimmer of hope.
But he then tried one big hit too many and was well held by substitute fielder Liam Rothery to give Whitwam his fourth wicket, which he quickly followed up with a fifth when bowling Jonathan Shackcloth.
In the meanwhile, Baxter had moved smoothly through his half-century and into the seventies, but (Fletcher apart) it was a lone effort, and he was the last man out, bowled by the returning Hinchliffe for a battling 79 (eight fours and two sixes) as Elland were dismissed for 205.
Thongsbridge chairman Alan Moore awarded the man-of-match to Horner for his brilliant knock, while Mrs Anne Richardson (on behalf of sponsors Romida) presented the Cup to winning skipper Ashley Pamment.
“It’s fantastic for Golcar, and I’m just so delighted for everyone at the club,” said Pamment.

“It is a momentous day for the club, and I think the party will go on all week!”

Jul 13 2009 by David Lockwood, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
WHITWAM SEALS WIN!

A WELL-TIMED unbeaten 89 from Steve Whitwam along with some great support play led Golcar to a four-wicket victory over Skelmanthorpe in yesterday’s second Sykes Cup semi-final at Swallow Lane. Chasing Skelmanthorpe’s 183-8, Whitwam batted through to see his side safely through to their first Cup final since 1963 to the obvious delight of a huge Golcar following.
A heavy downpour had interrupted the tie for almost three-quarters-of-an-hour during Golcar’s reply, but it didn’t affect Whitwam’s concentration, as he and Chris Fawcett put on a match-defining stand of 87 for the fourth wicket as a shaky start to the reply.
Both James Sykes and Craig Horner fell within two deliveries to James Crossland, and at 11-2 (and missing two of their normal first team batsmen) it suddenly looked a big ask for the home team.
But Whitwam received good support from Micky Illingworth, who helped him put on 42 for the third wicket, before Fawcett arrived in the middle and helped retrieve the situation.
Twice Whitwam flicked Crossland over the houses on the square leg boundary for big sixes, while a delightful cut behind square brought up the 100 in the 30th over.
And by the time Dominic Storey got through Fawcett’s guard and bowled him for a valuable 38 in the 38th over, the odds had swung dramatically in Golcar’s favour. Glen Collier then offered further support to the Swallow Lane’s talisman, and he virtually put the result beyond doubt when crashing four fours in one over from Storey to lift the score to 164-4.
A couple of overs later he was bowled by the returning Craig Glover for 24, but by now it was all over bar the shouting, and although Adam France followed next ball caught behind, a classic cover drive from skipper Ashley Pamment, followed by another straight driven four made the scores level.

And that just left Whitwam to deliver the coup de grace with a lofted straight drive for four (his 14th) and the celebrations began. At the start of the day, Skelmanthorpe captain Adam Dollive decided to bat after winning the toss, but must have wondered whether it was a wise decision as Will Hinchliffe and Ben Hilliard produced a fine spell of tight pace bowling to restrict the visitors to 31-3 after 22 overs.
Indeed, it wasn’t until Max Joice arrived at the crease that the game saw the first boundary, when he cracked his first delivery for four.
Scott Dyson helped Joice put on 68 for the fourth wicket, as between they began to push the score along, helped by Dyson’s three straight sixes off the bowling of Horner.
Hilliard held a super skied catch from Dyson (35) to break the partnership and when Joice holed out to James Sykes on the mid-wicket boundary in the 40th over with the score on 109, Skelmanthorpe were again in a spot of bother.
Richard Cocking was next to go after a mix-up with Kristian Whittaker and was run out to leave the visitors on 121-6. However, Whittaker (28) and Adam Dollive (21no) put together some useful late runs to push them on to 183-8 which looked a pretty-much par score.
Hilliard finished with three for 34, while Whitwam had two for 41 and although Hinchliffe only had the one victim, his 13-over stint went for just 24 runs (six maidens).
“I’m delighted for Steve (Whitwam) as this will be his first Cup final for Golcar, and I’m just as pleased for the club and the players here, who have gone so long without playing in a major final,” said winning skipper Pamment.
“Now we’ve just got to hope we can carry on and get the job done in the final against Elland.”

Golcar 6pts Shepley 0pts

Shepley's batsman had a poor day at the office as they went down to Golcar. For the second game this weekend a match that was there for the winning was lost, leaving the side with no points out of twelve after five consecutive wins. Shepley's innings got off to a bad start when SP Singh was lbw to a ball that kept low in the first over. A stand of 47 between Sam Haigh (24) and Tim Rees (22) augured well, but when they went the middle order subsided with five wickets falling for 29 runs, including a number of rash shots. Romain Grenville (28) hit Hilliard out of the attack with four boundaries in an over and Danny Glover (21*) batted well, but Shepley were all out for just 134, with 8.5 overs unused. The target looked at least thirty runs short as Golcar replied. Whitwam and Sykes started well, putting on an untroubled 29 before the wicket began to find a bit of life. Grenville had the dangerous Whitwam lbw and Singh started a wonderful spell where his first nine overs returned 2-9. Don Bandula Ranjith had Illingworth caught, leaving Golcar on a nervous 68-4 as runs seemed impossible to find. However, not for the first time against Shepley, Robshaw (46no) stepped up to launch an assault, slog-sweeping Singh for three massive sixes, helped by a bright knock from Ashley Pamment (20no), seeing their team home by six wickets with over sixteen overs to spare.

2008 Results
20/20 No Result V Rastrick

Rastrick 158-8 (20) Golcar 137-5 (17.2)Illingworth (50) Horner (30) Ruscoe 22no......Unusual happenings at Swallow lane to report from this one. Rastrick hit well to post a challenging score but it was the 2nd innings that was bizarre to say the least. The Rastrick players needing to win to have a chance of topping the group were vociferously opposing the first bad light call from the umpires which was understandable. Although there were some rather unnecessary words said from a fired up bunch. After the restart Illingworth and Bullet had resurrected the Golcar innings and were within 22 of the target from 2.4 overs. At this juncture the fielding side started complaining that they couldnt see the ball flying around and asked the umpires for the light. Hard to explain from a team needing to win!!
20/20 Result V Barkisland Away

Barkisland 144-7 Golcar 145-6 (14.1)Welsford (60).........Golcar smoothed into the Quarter finals with a game to spare against a clearly depleted Barkisland side. 144 from the home side was comfortably managed with time in hand as Welsford (60) was given support in the run chase!! Highlight of the night was the superb sound system provided by the home side. As more teams embrace this competition the better it will become each year and Golcars coloured clothing and Barkislands sound system should be congratulated.

20/20 Result V Elland Away

Elland 196-2 Golcar 197-8 (19.5) (Welsford 100). What a game!! Elland were asked to bat first and Ryan Robinson made full use of the 6 over fielding restrictions bringing up a very fluent 50 in 5 overs. When Jack expertly caught and bowled him there was a relative lull in the plundering as Cobber joined in to put the brakes on a high speed runaway train. Momentum was with the home side however and considering the start 196 was a bit of a result!! When Cobber and Jack fell early the task took on a steep look but Welsford had other plans as he blazed and carressed his way to an amazing 17 over ton on the wide acres of Hullen Edge. First Ben Robshaw played some great shots then Craig Ruscoe partnered Woosha well and finally Ash Pamment played some exquisite cover drives to bring the 196 into view. A massive " I didnt really get it" maximum from Woosh was just about game ball and when he was bowled next ball only 8 were required off 2 overs. Pamment then somehow got 7!! leg byes in 3 balls to close the game out. Both teams deserve credit in what has to be the best 2020 game Huddersfield league cricket is ever likely to witness.

Sun First XI Golcar 142 all out (Robshaw 43) Barnsley 146- 1.
Second XI Golcar 199-6 Honley 202-4

Golcar ones proud unbeaten season record in all competitions came to an abrupt end at the hands of triple championship winning Honley. The family posted a below par 165-7 on a flat wicket with Bangladeshi spinner and international playboy Enamul Ul Haq getting his teeth into the Golcar top and middle order. Cobber 51 and Jack 31 resisted for a while but the innings sidled along and as wickets fell a late burst wasn't forthcoming. Honley set off well as Greaves and Cox hit out before both fell LBW. Si Kelly was fluid as ever and backed up by Rick Jakeman they reached their target in good time. Both players were dropped at first slip and by the keeper as Tim Welsford got some life out of the moistening deck as the rain threatened. Golcar stayed top of the league but Honley closed the gap significantly.

First XI v Holmfirth 123 allout (Welsford 6-50) Golcar 125-2(Whitwam 73 no).
Sun First XI V C West Match Abandoned. Ground waterlogged. 2 pts each

Saturdays brought a weather affected wicket and once Holmfirth skipper Karl Jump had decided to bat first it was pretty obvious the home team didnt need to be chasing a large total. The away team played with freedom on a deck which would claim your wicket if a totally defensive approach was adopted. At 80-2 it looked like being a long day but Tim Welsford provided 6 wickets(on a hattrick twice) and Steve Whitwam 3 with Craig Ruscoe claiming the important wicket of Javed Iqbal snr. Another good opening partnership between Cobber and the rejuvenated Micky Illingworth provided the platform to claim a good 6 points. Illingworth did a pretty good impression of Brian Close in his pomp, takin blows on chin, chest and the "lower stomach" during a brave innings. Welsford and the effervescent Cobber(73no) finished the game with a flourish. Visitors skipper Jump maybe in for a long summer although his team has plenty ability and will win games if they continue with their attacking style. Sundays fixture was a washout at a very soggy Clayton West.

Ron Whitwam reports....
Another great weekend for the firsts with two 6 pointers and some more batsmen getting quality time in the middle on Saturday when Cobber & Jack had gone for 4 between them and Micky and Tim in to repair things, which they did to a treat with Micky getting 42 before he was caught with the score on 84. Gary then came and made a maginficent 49 whilst Tim showed his class at the other end and made 92 before they both went quickly.Ben and Craig also went quickly and that left James and Phil nearly ten overs to bat, and bat they did with Phil making 36 and James 13 as they put on over 50 before Phil got caught and was joined by Ash who got a quick 8 as we reached a commendable 265. Emley started very well scoring 40 off the first 4 overs but after the intrduction of Cobber things slowed down and the final score was 121 all out in 22 overs with Cobber getting 7 for 24, Tim 2 for 39 and Craig 1 for 50. Sunday in a cold & windy Holmfirth was much more interesting and very nearly turned out badly as we almost lost in the final few overs what was earlier a fairly comfortable run chase. Holmfirth batted first and after a similar start to the Emley game and with all five of the first batsmen getting starts it fell away, until two of the later order batsmen getting 25 helped it to a respectable 183. The wickets were shared with Tim 2 for 59, Craig 1 for 39, Jack 3 for 21 and Cobber 3 for 55, helped by 3 catches behind the wickets by Glen.   Micky and Cobber started well and with the score on 84, when Micky got caught, there was no sign of what was to come. Jack came and went for a duck but then Tim came and went for 18, James for 15 and Phil for 4 leaving Craig and Cobber with two overs left and 11 wanted with Holmfirth, after a magnificent fight back, really fancying their chances. Come the last over, with 6 still wanted to win,Craig got a single of the first ball, Cobber got a two and one off the next two and Craig got a one off the fourth before Cobber relieved us all by hitting four off the next to last ball leaving him 93 not out, phew! The Holmfirth team, who had given their all to come back like they did, could't believe it, neither could some of our supporters! The seconds had a much less happy weekend losing two very close games. On Saturday they batterd first at Kirkburton and with Rob Read getting a great 100, Dan Woodhead 20, Sam Gill 18, Urfan Ali 34 and brother Sofar 22 no, reached 205. Kirkburton are a good batting side however and knocked them off for 5 wickets with Ricky taking 3 for 43 and Moggy 2 for 42. Dobbo had a catch and stumping. On Monday Homfirth batted first and got 169 for 9. Mick 3 for 36, Urfan 3 for 19. Moggy 2 for 36. However with Sam 48, Urfan 38, Jake 23 and Ricky 17 being the only double figure scores, we fell 9 runs short in a very keenly faught game.

Confidence was high going into a potentially tricky second round Sykes Cup tie with Kirkburton but a superb allround bowling display and some wonderful catches swung the game Golcars way. Welsford Ruscoe Whitwam and Horner bowled with control and variation to leave a 173 target procured on the best batting deck in Huddersfield. 4 batsman were required. Illingworth 16 Whitwam 72 Horner 73 no and Welsford 6 no gulped down the runs with insatiable hunger.

Shat 170-8 (Welsford 6-70) Golcar 172-2 (Whitwam 77no, Colman 57no)
Sun V Micklehurst 228-5 Golcar 230-3 (C Horner 102no S Whitwam 79no)
Second XI v Shat
Golcar Won 6 points

Solid wins for both firsts and seconds against Skelmanthorpe saw both teams hit the top of the league. It is still the middle of May however and both outfits will have lots of tests to come. Saturday at Swallow lane once again brought sunshine and a hearty crowd spilling into the ground. The numbers swelled by the adjoining Golcar Lily day at Townend. Once again Skipper Pamment lost the toss to away captain and thoroughly nice man Adam Dollive. The decision was that Shat would have first use of a good looking batting track.
Tim Welsford and Craig Ruscoe bowled with control and quality to tie the openers down with Bullet making the initial breakthrough as Sarfraz Ahmed was forced to play on. As the opposition batsmen tried to up the tempo so Woosha became unplayable picking up three quick wickets. From then on the home side controlled the innings. The fielding and catching was excellent. Amit Dani survived one half chance and compiled a very impressive 94 before holing out trying to reach his ton with a 6. A late onslaught from the bear-like Whittaker boosted the score to 170-8. Welsford once again took 6 wickets in an exhibition of control and accuracy.
Woosha was promoted to open with the prolific Whitwam and hit one glorious off drive before falling to an ambitious drive to leg to the away swing of Dani. Craig Horner and Cobber steadied the ship with a solid partnership until Jack fell to a good ball from Scoots Dyson. Gary Colman entered the fray with his first stroll to the crease this season and inevitably started pinging the leather to all parts. The self named Great Gazza put on 120 alongside the relentless Whitwam and victory was achieved with many overs remaining......................
The second eleven recorded a comfortable win at Skelmanthorpe to record their third consecutive six-pointer of the campaign.

Some days at the cricket stick in the memory longer than usual. Sunday v Micklehurst in the Heavy Woollen Cup 2nd round was one of those days. After again losing the toss on a belter of a day and wicket the visitors posted a challenging 228-5 including 99 no from Ashad who incidentally joined in a home team huddle at one stage!! Sam Gill bowled out dangerman Lonerghan and great spells from each bowler restricted the total to manageable proportions. The 10 over maximum rule is a good one and scores inevitably increase because of it.
Golcar set off in confident fashion against a weakened bowling attack safe in the knowledge that some overs would have to be bowled by Micklehursts occasional seamers. James Sykes and Steve Whitwam once again set a nice foundation before the Rugman holed out at point for a positive 30.
The next ten minutes were bizarre to say the least. Michael Illingworth came to the crease and got off the mark first ball with a confident stroke. Maybe word had spread to the village that he was batting because as he was preparing to face his next ball a VERY scantily clad young lady entered the ground and marched with purpose along the bottom boundary. A small round of applause began from the excellent and vociferous contingent in front of the bar. It quickly spread to all parts of the ground faster than a Yabbi Creek bushfire. Play had to be suspended as the fielding side lent their support and then the umpires Bobby and Barry, obviously aroused, raised their hands well above their heads and clapped long and hard. Incredible scenes and with concentration understandably broken Golcar lost 2 wickets in 2 balls as Mouse and Woosha fell. As things settled down amongst the 250-strong crowd Craig Horner further cemented his cult status with the thirsty throng. Jack hit 102 not out in 62 balls of sublime entertainment supported superbly by Cobber 79not out. Another victory and a day to savour and remember for a long time.

Golcar 211-7 (Horner 68, Whitwam 59, Welsford 34) Elland 171 allout (Welsford 6-93) Sun V ABCC Sykes Cup 1st round ABCC 52 allout (Welsford 3-10 Whitwam 3-10 Horner 2-10 Pamment 2-10) Golcar 54-3.
Second XI v Elland.
Golcar 219-3 ( Dave Woodhead 64 Rob Read 86 S Gill 35 Elland 131 allout (Urfaan Ali 4-10) Sun v Pip Hill. Pip Hill 239-7 Golcar 215 allout (Urf Ali 65 P Rothery 34) Saturday brought a glorious day of sunshine at a very impressive looking Hullen Edge. The Golcar family rolled into Elland buoyed by a successful first weekend. The home team had a solid look, including ex-England gloveman Richard Blakey, Current Yorkshire pace bowler Shazhad, the sublimely talented Ryan Robinson and a cluster of top class league players. Golcar lost the toss and were inserted on a good looking track.
Steve Whitwam and James Sykes got the innings off to a solid start in the face of some very tight bowling. At 25 overs only 70 runs had been procured, however with no wickets lost the platform was set. Whitwam was joined by Craig Horner at the 30 over stage and "Jack" struck the ball all over the large hullenedge park. His 38 ball 64 was a real match swinger and included 5 large bombs peppering the adjoining tennis and bowling facilities.
Cobber picked up the pace too to compile another half century (59). Tim Welsford marched to the crease with a confident air following Cobbers demise and struck long and clean in adding 34. Both Jack and Woosha fell close to the end as the innings petered out a little. Skipper Pamment(10) hit a couple of boundaries to see the score pass the 200 mark and at tea both captains would have been equally satisfied.
The Elland innings started in explosive fashion however as Welsford bowled straight and full at the top order on a clearly deteriorating wicket and at 7-3 the visitors took control of the match. Cobber bowled with guile and style and the hard working Woosha (22-3-93-6) was rewarded for his rapier like accuracy.
The home side rallied to 171 but after the early body blows never really got into a position to reach the target. Shazhad exclusively drove 55 quick runs before being expertly caught by Dan Woodhead. Craig Fletcher looked impressive with the bat with a gutsy 39. The family enjoyed a couple of beers before the trip to Armitage Bridge on Sunday then Monday. We won that one too in a dull contest to qualify for the Sykes Cup 2nd round. The twos had a great win on Saturday against a strong Elland second team. Rob Read top scored with 86 and Mr Consistent Dave Woodhead carressed 64 before Urfaan Ali ripped through the middle order to finish with spell-binding figures of 4-10.
Sunday saw the seconds fall at the first Paddock Shield hurdle to a useful Primrose Hill team, whom it has to be said, would probably beat their First XI 9 times out of 10. Mick Smiths men can now concentrate on a league and crowther cup filled campaign.
First XI v Shepley.
SHEPLEY 132-9 (Wiles 48, Heaton 29, Whitwam 6-39) GOLCAR 133-1 (Whitwam 68no, Sykes 16, Horner 39no)
Second XI v Shepley.
SHEPLEY 162 All Out (P Dobson 50no, Dave Woodhead 44 GOLCAR 163-8 (Moxon 3-36)
Summer finally arrived at Swallow Lane on Saturday. Well I say summer, it sort of arrived.....for about ten minutes, then went away quicker than a Brett Lee leg cutter. Spirits were high before the game started as the boys re-convened in that most marvellous of places The Dressing Room. Welcomed to the team were Tim Woosha Welsford, Glen Collier, Craig Ruscoe, Craig Horner,Ben Robshaw and Si Walker following a significant winter team strengthening program. Adam France unfortunately may not get on the field this season following a serious industrial injury, however he was there to lend his support and everyone at the club wishes him all the luck in the world during his rehabilitation.
The toss was won and Shepley were inserted on a dampish track. Shepley got off to a bit of a flier 48 off 8 as Wiles and Heaton didnt miss out on a bad ball. The introduction of Cobber to partner Woosha brought some much needed control to proceedings. The mercurial all-rounder and "local hero" was the star of the show takin 6 wickets whilst our new recruit from Melbourne will bowl worse and have more success. Craig Horner enjoyed the turning conditions as he picked up his first scalp of the season during a miserly 10 over spell. The new 30 minute tea break proved very popular giving the boys the ten minutes extra required to wade through the superb array of niceities on offer!!
As the second innings got underway James "the rugman" Sykes looked in particular good touch crashing 3 drives through the covers. Cobber was a little more circumspect as he felt his way into the season. He had a couple of slices of luck before getting into his stride ending with a well compiled 68no. Horner looked very comfortable scoring a run a ball 39no as the finishing tape was snapped with 18 overs to spare.
On Sunday the "family" turned up at Bankfoot CC to discover no chance of play. After some dialogue between skippers and umpires it was decided a bowl-out was the best course of action to find a result. Tension grew as a large crowd gathered in the middle and Bankfoot took the lead with their third delivery. Craig Ruscoe equalised with Golcars 4th as the nailbiting contest went into sudden death. They missed and we hit as Woosha bowled a beauty that knocked the lot over to secure a second round tie with Micklehurst. An early finish allowed plenty time to savour a successful weekend and savour it we did!!
The Second team kicked off life in the premiership with an exciting contest at Shepley. The home team setting 162. Golcar were quickly in a bit of strife until Dobbo stepped up to the plate with a cool 52 not out. This allowed him the new nickname as "The finisher" A La Michael Bevan. Other notable performances from the rock solid Dave Woodhead (44) and three wickets on debut from Moxon.

TEAM MATES with Steve "Cobber" Whitwam.......ripped off from Soccer AM. A fascinating insight into what really happens in the head of the best all rounder in the league!!

Best Trainer?........ Craig (Bullet) Ruscoe - Been to every one this year - Go on lad. Also Nike, personal favourite of mine
Worst Trainer?....... Hi-Tech & Gaz Colman - Never seen him there, although it doesn't seem to affect his game!!
Most Skilful?........ Christiano Ronaldo & Ash Pamment in the slips - Best slipper I've seen. But if we're talking best player it has to be Wasim Jaffer, was an honour and pleasure to play with the guy
Biggest Drinker?...... Craig Horner - Enough said.. Faaaaaaaaaaaack. Mitch O'Connor was also fair, but no one can match Jack - No one!!
Worst Drinker?....... Mouse - 3 Strongbows and he's anyones. Jeremy Brown was not far behind either - Sambookas!!!
Best Fashion sense?...... Pains me to say Si Walker, and it was a joy to be in the same changing rooms as Riz Haider in his prime!
Worst Fashion sense?........ Ben (Chav) Robshaw - Sorry pal...
Best Taste in music?...... Gaz Colman - On the same level as me, don't know if that's good thing or not though
Worst taste in music?....... Mouse again - Terrible man
Best dancer?....... Myself obviously, and Jeremy Brown, the "rollover shotgun" and "lawn mower" he invented will not be forgotten!!
Worst dancer?...... Theres too many to single anyone out, it's rare we can stand let alone dance after a few - Like when Rugman got snipered in Tokyos!!
Longest in Shower?....... No Comment!!

Craig Horner "Jack" has joined us after a very successful spell at Lascelles Hall where he skippered the side to Sykes Cup Glory in 2004. He has immense experience as a top class league all rounder and will add stability in both the batting and bowling departments.

Tim Welsford "Woosha" "Welsy" has signed as our overseas player for 2008. Tim is Club Captain at the highly-regarded Carlton Cricket Club in Melbourne Victoria. He is a current team-mate of Jeremy Brown, an Ex-Golcar favourite. Tim is a genuine all-rounder. He recently married Robina just prior to the New Year. He is also a fitness trainer.

Simon Walker "Stalker" has joined us to take the First XI gloves. Former Broad Oak(where he won the League 'keeping prize) Scholes and Meltham. Simon is full of enthusiasm behind the sticks and enjoys keeping his fielders motivated throughout. He is also a very underrated lower order batsman.
Ben Robshaw has joined us from Lascelles Hall. Ben is a hard-hitting middle order batter who can change the course of a game in a very short space of time. Ben also has one of the best pair of hands in the league and is an expert ground fielder.
Glen Collier has joined from nearby Meltham. He is already a popular member at the club and surrounding pubs. Glen was a major part of the Meltham juggernaut of the eighties and nineties. His trophy cabinet is bigger than the one at Anfield. He also loves the Huddersfield Giants

TEAM MATES with TGG (The Great Gazza).......ripped off from Soccer AM. The Elegantly Destructive allrounder opens the gates to his thoughts! Get to know a little about what Gary Colman thinks about his dressing room comrades

Best Trainer?........Used to be a Nike man but prefer Asics these days. Cobber – he’s so keen it’s almost boring.
Worst Trainer?......Gola. Can only be me I’m ashamed to say. I’m just too old, knees are knackered and I live miles away. Also find it difficult to drag myself away from Shaz and wine on a week night.
Most Skilful?........Harold ‘Woosh Woosh’ Welsford – his control and accuracy give me movement at mid on week in, week out. Class act.
Biggest Drinker?......In days gone by, definitely me but I’ve recently been overtaken and now lapped by Jack ‘Two pints at tea please’ Horner.
Worst Drinker?.......Mickey ‘Sups like a budgie with chapped lips’ Illingworth – One word – terrible drinker.
Best Fashion sense?......Pains me to say it but probably Ash Pamment – mixes retro with contemporary whilst simultaneously retaining class and sophistication only ever seen at the very pinnacle of modern fashion.
Worst Fashion sense?........Easy – Jack Horner. Never seen anything like it. From 80’s under garments to 70’s shirts to ridiculous Surf shorts – it’s just wrong on so many levels.
Best Taste in music?......Simon ‘Taz’ Walker – He proved his worth to me on this front on a romantic evening in a Newcastle hotel room. Thanks for the memories Si.
Worst taste in music?.......Cobber – Can be regularly be heard crooning along to various 90’s boy bands and admits to loving Leona Lewis. Not changing room behaviour – simple as.
Best dancer?.......I’ve seen Mickey chuck a few moves and although he’s no Justin Timberlake, he’s probably the best of a bad bunch.
Worst dancer?......Me again. Loved dancing until someone filmed me on their phone – I looked like a spaz in a magnet factory. Never again.
Longest in Shower?.......Liam ‘Longshanks’ Rothery. Ridiculous (and not remotely attractive). More a wizard’s wand than a baby’s arm.

Quiz Night at the "CC"
A huge crowd showed up on a cold Wednesday night at the Club for the famous annual Sports Quiz presented by Thorpey. 3 rounds of diverse and very entertaining sports trivia interrupted by a gargantuan supper made for a cracking night. Tension built throughout the evening and finally the defending champions prevailed. The Posties, who presumably deliver letters and parcels for 2 hours a day and test each others knowledge the rest of the time won by a comfortably margin....Well done boys!! A team from Scholes chased them all the way up the rails but experience showed in the end. A Big thanks to Thorpey for hosting a very successful evening AND to the dozens of teams who made it on a bitter winters night!!
"THE DINNER"
A large contingent of members, players and supporters met for a splendid evening at the Golcar Lily on Saturday 9th Feb. MC for the evening was Secretary Claire Woodhead-Turner and the main speakers were President Ian Sutherland and First XI Skipper Ashley Pamment. Following a beautifully presented 4-course dinner a disco ensued. This included a very popular Soccer AM-style 'Dance Off" involving Golcar FCs guardian of the jumpers and fanatical CC supporter Matty Day going against the very obvious All-Round and very rhythmic skills from Golcar CC swinging legend Micky Brook. A draw was the outcome however a 10 minute delay was observed whilst the dancefloor was dried out. Many thanks to The Golcar Lily and their wonderful staff for making it a night to remember(for most). Thanks also to the outstanding DJ Johnny.

Second XI beat Elland.

Saturday 19th July. The weather did it's best to spoil things again just when we needed to get back on track after the previous disappointing weekend but we did manage to get started at 3.45 with a 28 overs a side game. Elland batted first and got off to a breezy start with Ryan Robinson blasting 14 off Tim's first over and 9 off his second and they were 28 off 5 overs, until Ash pulled off a magnificent run-out to get rid of the fluent Lee Baxter in the 6th over. Woosha despatched Robinson via a great snaffle from Micky and things settled down a little. They continued playing 20/20 shots as they came and went in quick succession. Shazhad hit some monster bombs but always looked like getting out. He chipped Woosha to Jack at mid wicket and departed for 30. Ash caught Borgas and the dangerous Thornton off Welsford and Whitwam respectively as Golcar put in their best fielding performance of the season. Cobber caught their last man off Wooshwoosh with the score on 125. Tim ended with 6 for 77 from 13 overs and Cobber 3 for 45 from 13 overs. Once again we started badly with Cobber going first ball caught at leg slip and Micky lbw in the 2nd over for 4. However Jack & Tim soon got things ticking over and after only 9 overs we were half way there on 61 for 2. 8 overs later came the winning run with Tim and Jack with magnificent 67 and 54 not outs respectively. Great stuff and just what we needed to get us back into our winning ways.

12 July Golcar V Shepley. Shepley 178 for 6 Golcar 162 all out.
Sun 13 july Sykes Cup semi final Golcar 106 all out Delph and Dobcross 107-7

After a run of 3 real nail-biters I suppose we all half expected another at Delph and we were not wrong, I don't know how long our more elderly supporters are going to be able to stand it! We batted first, which has been our preference all season and once again got off to a bad start, against some of the best bowling we have faced this season, when Micky was caught in the slips for 0 in the fifth over. Jack came in and things ticked over until he mis-hooked and was caught for 11. In came Tim who also mis-hooked when 3 but it dropped safe and Tim called for a quick single, which was probably not on, was sent back and run out for 3. James joined Cobber and things were steadily getting pulled round when Cobber mis-timed a cut and was caught at old-fashioned point for 20. Hogg, who was bowling better than I've ever seen him before, having then got the 1st three batsmen for not so many. James Sykes and Gary Coleman did a backs to the wall re-building job until Gary holed out for 22, James was bowled for 15, Phillip was caught behind for 6 and Ben was bowled first ball - all off Mirza. Ash and Glenn dug in for 7 each and Simon got his highest score of the season in 1 not out as we finished on 106. Hogg 3 for 20, Mirza 4 for 35. Enter Delph's star batting line-up to knock them off, was the feeling, especially by the home crowd, but after Tim got Cruise for 0 & Zahoor for 4 things got a bit quieter until Kiljee and Hogg put on a 50 partnership. Things quietened again as Kiljee & Haynes went to Cobber in 2 balls, Jack got Hogg caught behind for 35 Cobber got Simpson ct. Ben for 4. 6 down and still over 30 required when Jones the Captain strode to the wicket. Smethurst went for 10, caught Ben off Jack, with over 20 required, but try as we may that was it, as Jones did a great job for his team getting 19 not out whilst Mirza chanced his arm and finished with 10 not out. What a game - enjoyed by an enormous crowd, on a nice sunny day and played in a hard competitive spirit by both teams, it was a credit to all the players & officials alike. Cobber 3 for 43, Jack 2 for 27, Tim 2 for 34.

5th July Golcar V Shelley. Golcar 138 for 6 Shelley 137 for 7

In terms of wins this season this didnt rank too highly. After the morning rain the chances of play looked bleak however at noon the sun came out and the drying operation began. 2 O Clock start time was a great achievement and as Shelley were inserted the game took on a surreal feel. Only 30 runs were scored from 20 overs as Bullet Tim and Cobba bowled miserly spells together with The Shelley batsmens reluctance to take any risks. Once again Tim Welsford bowled superbly to take 6 wickets and reached 60 for the season. Friedlander played well to compile 63 no as Shelley finished on 137-7. Their point secured. The target was reached in the 36th over with too many dramas than required. Over-confidence and a deteriorating wicket were probably the main causes but Micky(29) Tim(38) James(14no) and a final barrage from Ben(23no) saw the 5 points bagged when 2 were expected during the morning monsoon.

28/29 June  Sat First XI Golcar 173 for 8 Delph & Dobcross 169 all out
Sunday Micklehurst 169 all out Golcar 172 for 5
Second XI Broad Oak 75 all out Golcar 76 for 4

What a weekend ! One never to be forgotten by anyone who was lucky enough to see one of the matches, if you saw them both you really were priveledged and we must congratulate all the players involved for never giving it up and sticking it out to the very last balls in both games against two of the other top sides in the league. Saturday and Delph & Dobcross came fully loaded with all their stars and full of confidence (as ever), won the toss and batted. We had a great start, removing their first three for less than 40, when their two current County men, Hogg & Haynes got together and - disaster - we dropped Hogg off his first ball. They went on to put on 69 until Tim got Haynes caught behind (one of Simon's 4 catches) and Hogg went on to make 57 with the help of their middle order to take the score to 139 for 6. After that wickets fell regularly for a score of 169 - very pleasing after their start. Cobber and Micky opened and again - disaster - Cobber caught behind for 4. Jack joined Micky and took the score on to 69 when they brought on their spinner, Mirza, who immediately got amongst the wickets and had Mickey, Tim, Jack & James back in the tent along with Gary and Ben sent back by Hogg, leaving us 92 for 7. Craig got his head down and started to tap Mirza about a bit ably assisted by Glen and together they put on 30 valuable runs until Mirza had Glen caught. Enter the Skipper with 52 still needed and Simon padded up! However he was feeling it didn't show as he calmly pushed the ball about giving Bullet as much strike as he could. 150 was reached, Delph began to get a bit quieter, our crowd got a bit louder. 160, then Craig hit Mirza for 12 in one over and all of a sudden Ashley pulled Khiljee for four and we'd won. Magnificent doesn't even get close to describing it. Sunday we had to come down to earth and go to Micklehurst in the pouring rain. It stopped at about 2.30 and one can only congratulate the Micklehurst players on the way they all got stuck in with sponges, forks, rollers and anything else that was to hand to enable us to start a 25 overs a side game at 4 0'clock. Cobber & Jack got us off to a good start going at 6 an over until Jack fell for 18 when we were 37 after 6 overs. Tim joined Cobber and they took the score to 105 after 14 overs when Tim got a top edge for 46. Micky came and went bat before wicket for 0 and Craig joined Cobber until he went for 77 with the score on 157 after 22 overs. Ben and Ash came and helped Craig (17 no) take the score on to a competitive 172. They got a reasonable start and lost their first wicket after 6 overs on 30. Enter their best - by - far batsman Lonergan who quickly settled down and kept the score going at a respectable rate whilst losing partners at regular intervals. Tim and Cobber bowled tight and with 5 overs left their number ten came in and thumped two fours to bring the total a bit nearer, then Lonergan thumped two sixes to bring it a lot nearer! 3 overs to go - 35 wanted - 15 scored: 2 overs to go 20 wanted - 16 scored: Last over- 4 wanted - Lonergan on strike - here comes Tim. Lonergan's bat comes through in an enormous arc but misses and Tim strikes - out - clean bowled for 84. Enter their number 11, what could he do, his mate at the other end gives him "advice" and off we go. Tim hurtles in, his bat flails, his wickets go in all directions. Tim ( 6 for 90 ) is chased all over the ground & mobbed by team mates. We've done it again! What a weekend, I'll never forget it, as I feel will no one else who saw it.

21/22 June
Sat First XI v Barkisland matches abandoned due to wet weather.
Sun First XI Golcar 214-7(Whitwam 86, Welsford 67) Shelley 104 all out

Sun Second XI Shelley 239 Golcar 240-0 (Wooders 119 no Urf 89 no WHAT A WIN!!! Go on lads Saturday saw firsts and seconds completely washed out. The firsts enjoyed a great afternoon of Karaoke fun with the Barkisland contingent. Sunday was drier, probably due to 90 mph winds and trees flying through the air like a scene from the Wizard of Oz. This didnt stop Golcars second XI winning a cracking affair against Shelley. The visitors to Swallow Lane laid 239 as a target. It was all in vain as Wooders and Ali stroked the reply with ease as the Emerald City was reached comfortably. The firsts trip to a wind strewn Westerley lane produced the 6 points required. Once again Cobber and Welsford hit a century stand as a challenging if not invincible 214-7 was posted. Some great groundwork and catching(Ben Robshaw 3) from Golcar allied to tight and penetrative bowling from Ruscoe Welsford Whitwam and Horner concluded the game minutes before a huge downpour. Much to the delight of Jack who went into something of a delight spasm...randomly shouting "Ya" and "Raindance" and other unprintable diatribe!!

14/15 June
First XI Golcar 279- 4(Whitwam 130 Welsford 110) Meltham 197 all out (Horner 4-58)
SYKES CUP QUARTER FINAL Sun First XI Lascelles Hall 144-8(Illingworth 40no, Horner 51, Welsford 25no) Golcar 145-2.

Solid wins at the weekend took Golcar into the Sykes Cup semi final and consolidated their league position. Saturday saw Ainsley Swallows Meltham arrive at a sunny Swallow Lane following a return to form over previous weeks. After a sticky start again, Illingworth and Horner removed, the grit of Whitwam and Welsford saw Golcar through a difficult new ball spell from Will Hinchliffe and Jackson. What followed was something of a barrage on the second string bowlers. Beautiful timing and elegant front and backfoot strokes oozed from two inform flashing blades. Cobber has been the epitome of consistency and Woosha has just hit that purple patch of form every batter dreams about. 2 tons and 3 50's in 5 knocks says it all. A rather rare event occurred when Whitwam and Welsford brought their respective hundreds up in consecutive deliveries bringin the healthy crowd to their feet twice. 279-4 was a stiff task for Meltham and although the confident Swallow and hard hitting Farrell put together a solid partnership te visitors closed on 197 all out with the guile of Craig Horner picking up 4 wickets. SLEDGES OF THE SEASON
Couple from Lancashire all rounder and genuinely nice bloke Kyle Hogg in the tense league fixture v Delph, as the chain smoking Jamie Haynes arrived at the wicket no doubt looking for an encouraging word from his county colleague Hogg muttered "This wicket is a Sh*t Tip!!"

Same game and same theme really...after a Welsford scorpion Hogg said "When can we have a go(bowl) on it!!"

Same game this one from Rob Read as one or 2 Delph fans were packing up their stuff with the game tied and 2 balls remaining Ready enquired "You lot not staying till the end then??"

As Golcar fast approached their target against Lascelles Hall in the Sykes Cup QF Next man in Benny Robshaw was getting some sound advice from seasoned campaigner Craig "Jack" Horner ......"Play straight Ben!!" to which came the reply......."I am gonna do .....but very f***ing aggressively!!"

At Barnsley CC Mark Lawson ex Yorkshire Pie Wanger was reverse sweeping very averagely when Micky from backward point informed him "you'll have to do it better than that if you wanna bring 'Sexy Back!'

This weeks goes to Umpire Barry. Following a rather sluggish 50 overs due to the searing heat and the home wicket keeper having running repairs to his gloves following every over the dry witted official came out with this gem. As tea approached he wandered over to square leg and muttered........ "Do they put a nice supper on here??"

A gutsy 83 ball 8 from a very focused young ABCC middle order batter brought this reaction from a smiling Gary Colman........"Where do you get your kicks pal A & E??"
